Citevana API and MCP server

Citevana has a free REST API and a free MCP server. Use them to check whether AI crawlers can reach a site, audit a page for SEO and AI readiness, generate an llms.txt file and read your own site audits. The tool endpoints need no key: without one they share the website's free-tool allowance of 3 checks a day, counted per internet connection. A free account and an API key raise that to 100 calls a day and unlock your workspace data.

REST API

Every response is JSON. Successful responses have "ok": true. The free tools return a plain-language summary and a to-do list ranked by importance, with time estimates.

Endpoints
MethodPathAccessWhat it does
GET/sitesKey with read:sitesLists the sites in the key's workspace.
GET/sites/{siteId}/audits/latestKey with read:auditsReturns the latest completed site audit: score, issues, AI readiness and to-dos.
POST/tools/ai-crawlersNo key needed (shared limit), or a key with read:toolsReads a site's robots.txt and reports which AI crawlers are allowed or blocked.
POST/tools/page-auditNo key needed (shared limit), or a key with read:toolsAudits one page: title, description, headings, canonical, noindex, structured data and alt text.
POST/tools/llms-txtNo key needed (shared limit), or a key with read:toolsChecks a site's llms.txt, or generates one from the links you send.

Example request

curl -s https://citevana.com/api/v1/tools/ai-crawlers \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"url":"https://example.com"}'

curl -s https://citevana.com/api/v1/sites \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $CITEVANA_API_KEY"

Errors

All errors use the same JSON shape, shown below. Error codes include invalid_request, invalid_url, blocked_host, fetch_failed, unauthorized, insufficient_scope, not_found, rate_limited and quota_exceeded.

{
  "ok": false,
  "error": {
    "code": "quota_exceeded",
    "message": "Daily api_calls quota reached."
  },
  "requestId": "req_…"
}

Limits and headers

Each metered response includes X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining and X-RateLimit-Reset (Unix seconds), describing whichever allowance the call was counted against. A 429 response also includes Retry-After. Keyless calls count against the shared free-tool allowance for your internet connection; keyed calls count against your workspace's daily api_calls allowance, and each key can have a lower daily cap of its own. A call that returns no result, because the site could not be reached or its bot protection answered instead, is not counted at all.

Browsers can call the free tool endpoints from any site without a key. Endpoints that need a key do not allow cross-origin browser requests, so call them from your server.

Add ?locale=es, pt-BR, de, fr, ja, id, hi, tr, vi or ar to a tool endpoint to get the summary in that language.

MCP server

Connect any MCP client that supports remote servers to https://citevana.com/api/mcp. It uses the Streamable HTTP transport, answers in JSON and keeps no sessions.

  • check_ai_crawlers — Which AI search, assistant and training crawlers a site allows. Free.
  • audit_page — On-page SEO and AI-readiness audit of one URL. Free.
  • generate_llms_txt — Builds an llms.txt file from a site name, summary and links. Free; nothing is fetched.
  • get_site_audit_summary — Latest audit for one of your sites. Needs an API key with read:audits.

The server supports protocol revision 2026-07-28 (per-request metadata and server/discover). It also accepts the initialize handshake of revisions 2025-11-25, 2025-06-18 and 2025-03-26.

The three free tools work without authentication, sharing the keyless allowance of 3 checks a day per internet connection. For get_site_audit_summary, your client must send your API key as an Authorization: Bearer header, which also raises that daily allowance. Citevana does not offer OAuth sign-in for MCP yet.

Add it to ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. Whether you can use it depends on your account and workspace policy.
  2. Go to Plugins and select the plus button.
  3. Enter a name (for example Citevana) and a short description.
  4. Under Connection, choose Public endpoint and enter https://citevana.com/api/mcp.
  5. Create the connection and review the tools it finds.

ChatGPT connects with OAuth or without authentication, and it cannot send API keys. The three free tools work there. get_site_audit_summary replies that it needs a key.

Add it to Claude

  1. Find the Connectors section in Claude.
  2. Click Add custom connector at the bottom of the section.
  3. Enter the remote MCP server URL https://citevana.com/api/mcp.
  4. Advanced settings (OAuth client ID and secret) are optional and not needed for these tools. Click Add.

Custom connectors are available on Claude and Claude Desktop for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Claude connectors use OAuth for sign-in, so only the free tools are available there for now.

Other MCP clients and your own agents

If your client lets you set HTTP headers for a remote server, add Authorization: Bearer followed by your key to unlock get_site_audit_summary. A call with a key counts against the same daily api_calls allowance as the REST API; without one it counts against the keyless free-tool allowance.

Chrome extension

The Citevana Chrome extension runs the AI-crawler check and the page audit on the tab you are viewing through this API. It needs no account and uses the keyless allowance; an optional key raises that limit and shows your own site audits. It is being prepared for the Chrome Web Store.

It asks only for activeTab and storage permissions, plus access to the Citevana API. It sends the page address only when you click a check, and never sends the query string.

Safety and privacy

  • Every tool is read-only. Nothing is ever changed on your website.
  • Text copied from fetched pages is marked as untrusted data, so AI assistants should never follow instructions found in it.
  • We fetch only public pages, as CitevanaBot, and we block private and reserved network addresses.
  • We store only a SHA-256 hash of each API key. The key is shown once, and you can revoke it at any time. Creating and revoking keys is recorded in the audit log.

Get an API key

Sign in and open Settings, then API keys. Choose the scopes the key needs (read:tools, read:sites, read:audits), and optionally set a daily cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Citevana API free?

Yes. The tool endpoints need no key and share the website's free-tool allowance: 3 checks a day, counted per internet connection, so everyone behind the same office or campus connection shares them. A free account and an API key raise that to your workspace plan's daily api_calls allowance, which is 100 a day on the free plan, and let you read your own sites and audits.

What is an MCP server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open protocol that AI assistants use to call external tools. Once you add the Citevana MCP server, an assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude can run the checks for you in the chat.

Can the tools change my website?

No. The API and MCP tools only read public pages and your audit results. Fixes are applied only in the Citevana app, and only after you approve each one.

Which AI crawlers does the check cover?

It covers OpenAI (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User), Anthropic (ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User), Perplexity, Google-Extended, Applebot, Meta, Amazon, Common Crawl and Bing. Each crawler links to its operator's documentation in the result.

What happens when I reach the limit?

The API returns 429 with the code quota_exceeded and a Retry-After header, and MCP tools return a message saying when the limit resets. Limits reset at 00:00 UTC. Without a key, the message also says how to get an API key, which is what raises the allowance.
